Waste is a global problem. Everyday we fill our earth with waste and the landfills are becoming wider, larger and taller. Per capita waste generation is 0.16 to 5.7 kg per person per day, and has an average of 1.1 kg/capita/day. The OECD countries generate 572 million tonnes of solid waste per year. The per capita values range from 1.1 to 3.7 kg per person per day with an average of 2.2 kg/capita/day. Soon there will be no space for all our waste.
By 2025 there will be 1.4 billion more people living in cities worldwide, with each person producing an average of 1.42kg of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day – more than double the current average of 0.64kg per day. Annual worldwide urban waste is estimated to more than triple, from 0.68 to 2.2 billion tons per year. Much as expected the most industrialized countries are the guiltiest of all.
Waste is a subject that has been bothering me for a long time. none of us realize how problematic it can be, so I am challenging myself and you all to try going waste-free for a month. I will be posting my struggles on facebook and if you are up to the challenge, come on over to my page and add your photos and share your struggles and findings.
